A quick and easy guide to teach the writer how to best use Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
How to Use SEO
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the science, or perhaps the art, of improving your chances of an article you have written or a web page you have created being found by the general public, via the use of search engines such as Google and AskJeeves.
The Title
The title of your article is extremely important when trying to attract visitors. Don’t try fancy wordplay or witty titles if you want to attract the biggest crowds. Go for something clear cut, sensible and easily recognisable. Look at the Hot Content list; it is very rare that you will find an article there with a stupid title, despite the fact that how and why you get onto Hot Content is in question. Notice the title of this article, straight to the point with very few over-complicated words.
Key Words
The first way that you can help people find your article that you have written is through the entering of applicable key words at the bottom of the page, once you have written your article. If you have written a scientific article or a technological one then don’t fill the key words list with long words that people will rarely search for. Put yourself in the mind of the searcher, what would you type if you were looking for your own article, without any prior knowledge to its existence?
It is also in my opinion that spamming a huge list of words that people may or may not search for is not beneficial. A short but sweet list of key words is what is best.
Content of the Article
When you are writing your article keep in mind the words that you are using. Try to pack your article with as many words as you possibly can, in order to make the article more relevant to search engines and include it at the top of the results. This is the essence of search engine optimisation and is the part that generally people forget to utilize.
Read Around The Subject
A good way to find out how to get hits is to do a Google search of the same subject area on which you are currently writing. See what appears on the top of the search results and what is on the first page when you have varied your different searches and have a look in the articles to see why they have appeared at the top.
