You should see links as doorways to your articles. Therefore, the more doorways (links) to your articles there are the more traffic your articles will attract. Also, the more doorways (links) people use to come to your articles the more clout your article will have in Search Engines. The higher up a search engine you are the more people will find your article in the organic (i.e. not the sponsored results) search results.
