Five Major Postulates on Driving Traffic to Your Site

Trying to approach the issue of the traffic phenomenon and deeply reflecting on the general behavior of writers and readers, I came up with the following postulates that I believe will undoubtedly increase a new writer’s and even a veteran writer’s traffic. Instead of blindly throwing out articles indiscriminately hoping they are read, starting it right will make a big difference in getting more traffic, thus more revenue.

1. Create your own website BUT make sure you launch it when you have a significant amount of content. This definitely will increase traffic to your articles and increase your revenues. I placed a big ‘BUT’ because if your website has nothing in it, your visitor will no longer want to see it again. The website should contain something useful that will prompt the visitor to visit it again, thus giving greater chances to click on your ads and bring you more revenue.

I waited a year before launching my website. Launching means I informed my friends about it, e-mailed my contacts, incorporated the ads, bought my own domain to make it search engine friendly as well as easier to type, and submitted it to Stumble Upon. Two days ago, I entered my articles in Booksie and Red Gage, but I got only one referral from those sites so far. Maybe that will take effect later.

Just a month after I did these things, I earn twice than before at Triond plus twice more than Triond earnings at Google Adsense. If you’re industrious enough, you can create another website. There is a tendency to spread yourself thin but if you want to invest and bring it further, an option could be hiring a good writer to add content there. That’s entrepreneurship.

2. Always make sure that you write relevant content. Quality articles will always be worth its weight in gold. A sloppy article will just shrug people’s shoulders away. And your name may probably be an allergen to them. Even though you turn out a lot of articles, they don’t get read anyway. So, why do you write in the first place? If you aim for quantity, don’t sacrifice quality to optimize your earnings.

3. Observe the flow of traffic in your website. Webnode, my website creator, has its own Website Statistics page. You can view visitors to your site, where they come from and even the URL of page and the number of pages they visited. This is similar to Google Analytics but is focused on your website’s performance. I was excited the first time I saw it. I got readers from all over the globe, at this point from 38 countries, one directly from a satellite host and one unknown. I wonder where that last one came from.

4. Don’t underestimate the power of keywords or tags. As I have written in my previous article that made a turning point in my readership and revenues, the application of Adwords Google to generate most searched keywords can make a big difference. I saw an article get more than 200 likes and more than a hundred comments but that took five years to accumulate. In my case, I garnered 133 likes and 105 comments in just a matter of six days! Many thanks to my readers and fellow writers! I was overwhelmed and touched by the responses. And I also thank Triond for putting me on the Hot Content list that drove significantly more traffic to my article.

5. Don’t dwell on your accomplishment. There is a tendency for us to stop once we accomplish something. Don’t just sit there! I know that applying my learnings in writing made a great difference in my traffic and revenue. So, a sudden spurt in my readership as shown in the graph I presented in the follow-up article I wrote three days ago, I resolved to write some more articles applying those tips. Search engine optimization (SEO) companies term the sudden change in traffic as the ‘golf club trend’. I think I could appropriately call mine a turning handle trend.

Well, I’m applying the KISS (Keep It Simple, S_ _ _ _ _ d) principle in my writing at this time so I’ll end it here meanwhile. Well, the last word is something to think about. Who can supply the letters?
