Basics of Site Promotion

Going through the basics of promoting one’s site, without annoying people.

I don’t know about you, but it’s tough promoting  a site online – without annoying people.

Here’s some easy pointers that one could use, and could actually benefit both your site – and also those of other bloggers and webmasters:

  1. Many have said that you have to go to forums.  Seriously, who has the time to go to hundreds of forums to find out that your signature may or may not be allowed as a comment on the forum.  I for one, have little time to devote to forums.  Instead, go to many of the top websites that allow comments.  Have fun looking at the various posts at those sites, and comment on them.  However, when you comment, but sure that you’re allowed to have a URL as part of the comment process.  This allows for a backlink to your site.  Also, be sure your comment is appropriate to whatever article you made a comment on.  It’s sad that a post would be about someone’s death, and the comment relates to someone’s site, rather then to that particular article.  Besides, many sites now review comments to reduce spam on their sites.
  2. How many blogs do you really have?  If you say “one”…then it’s a start.  May I suggest having multiple blogs, and each blog somehow points to your main blog.  This is a form of self-promotion, but at the same time be sure that each blog has relevent information…and not just a commercial or a “junk” page.
  3. Whenever you make a post on any one of your blogs…Digg it.   If you have Stumbleupon, or Technorati, use those sites also.  Be sure to understand the strengths and weakness’ of each site to get it’s most effective potential.
  4. Be a part of many social blogging platforms (ie Facebook, Myspace, Xanga, Bebo, Twitter…etc…)  This allows you to take advantage of the “word of mouth” aspect of promoting a site.    Again, be very careful in how you promote on each site.  You want to be personable, and not sound like a scripted commercial that people have heard/seen a million times before.
  5. Expect to spend a lot of time dealing with content and promotion.  After you have sites set up, and your game plan, it does get easier.  Budget your time well, however, and it will be more rewarding.

Thanks for reading, and Good Luck!

I really liked your article, especially the info about forums. I have heard a lot of people recommend promoting yourself on forums, but I have no clue how to do it without being obnoxious. Thanks, and good luck to you, too. :)

Find third party sites to re post a snippet and a link to your articles. This is what lands you on the hotlist.
