10 Realistic Alternatives to Google Adsense for Webmasters and Bloggers

Marketing

There is a world out there beyond Google AdSense. Many webmasters and bloggers have, for a variety of reasons, become disenchanted with the giant of the online adverting world and are looking for alternatives. Here are ten of those alternatives to start you off – with full links for you to research them to discover whether they are suitable for your ad needs.

Adbrite

One site which may help you to ‘monetize’ your blog or website is Adbrite.  On first inspection it works in a similar way to Adsense.  You submit an online sign up and you can get advertizing on your site in a few clicks and a little copy and pasting.  You get a dashboard (similar to the blogger dashboard) where you can see all the information about the adverts you are running.  You can also choose from a number of ‘advanced’ options like the overkill that is a fill page ad.  Adbrite maintains that you will earn more from these ads than from the standard ‘adsense’ type ads offered by other networks.

Money From Blogs

This money making opportunity does not require you to create an account before you get going which makes it a little different from other ad networks.  What you do here is submit anything up to three blogs and the folks at MFB will take a look and decide whether or not they want to use your blog as a portal for their adverts.  They do have some rules before hand, so if you do pay-per-post articles on your blog, forget it!  Also, your blog must have no content that is pornographic, it must be written in English and it must also be updated on a regular basis.  These guys are fussy, but it is worth the few seconds it takes to pop in your blogs’ URLs and see what comes of it!

Clicksor

This network is really for those of you with already successful websites or blogs which get lots of hits but a disappointing advertizing revenue return.  You get some control over the adverts that will appear if you join their ‘premium’ membership.  You can have a combination of inline text links (where you underline text and link it to an appropriate piece of advertizing) or contextual ads.  These come in a number of shapes and sizes – following the norm set by Google.  Clicksor boasts that you can receive a first payment in a little over two weeks from sign up.

Project Wonderful

Project Wonderful describes itself as an ‘advertising broker’ which aims to make online advertising much m ore transparent for webmasters who find the other networks somewhat obfuscatory in nature.  PW claims that it has reinvented online advertising and that they have made click fraud impossible.  For those of you who have been googled by Google – that is been accused effectively of click fraud then you may well want to explore PJ a little and see if this suits you.  They also claim that they will not limit you to a ridiculously high minimum payout (I think they may be referring to Google’s $100 ceiling here!).

Kontera

Kontera is the current king of  in-text contextual advertizing.  Realistically they are only worth signing up with if your blog or website is text rich.  In-text advertizing involves the network locating buzz words in your articles and hyperlinking those words to an appropriate advert.  Although some find this kind of linking an intrusion in to their read most people do not mind it.  It is a subtle (perhaps crafty?) way of increasing your ad revenue which does not involve banners or interstitials.  However, because of the discrete manner of the ads, do not expect to earn a fortune here!

Pay Pop Up

Pay Pop Up asks the question why don’t you get paid every time someone visits your site which infers that it is a pay per view rather than pay per click site.  You have to have over two hundred page views from unique visitors to be in with a looksy here.  However, affiliate members get paid every two weeks.  If you refer other people to PPU then you will get up to twenty percent of what they earn on top.  Although many people pooh-pooh referral systems (and quite rightly) if you are a determined advertiser with a network of people also running sites without PPU ads, then you may want to get on this particular band wagon!  You submit your site for consideration then sit back and wait.

Bidvertiser

Ah!  An advertising network with a minimum payout (to your PayPal account) of ten dollars!  The idea here is that you display the ads of your site, these get noticed by potential advertisers and they bid against each other to get that space – the highest bidder claiming it (of course!).   It is pay per click but with the ten dollar ceiling it may be an alternative for websites and bloggers with small amounts of traffic and a need to get the money in to your PP account, hug it, squeeze it then go out and buy a Big Mac meal when it gets to your bank account!  You can also block any ad that you don’t want, so you won’t end up with an ad from the scientologists like many Google Ads bloggers did recently!

Tribal Fusion

Only click on this link if your site has a large amount of hits and your content is pristine and high quality.  Tribal Fusion will represent you and take a lot of the work out of online advertising but they are very, very fussy who they take on board with them.

Rubicon

Rubicon offers something called Smartmatching which means that they match your content to advertising.  No news there, but they also do something which most other networks do not – and that is to introduce you to other networks as well.

Chitika

This network allows you (like most of the others) to run ads side by side with Google ads so you do not have to put all of your eggs in the same basket.  If people do a search and come across your site then the ads from Chitika will be tailored to the search rather than the content of your page.  As a source of additional revenue it is perhaps worth looking at.  Your regular readers will not see the ads, only your search traffic, so the temptation any of your friends may have to click, click and click (thinking they are doing you a favor) is redundant – they will simply not see the ads.

As a note, the inclusion of the sites above does not represent a recommendation of the sites.  They are listed simply to make your search for alternatives to Google a little easier.  It is entirely up to you to research each site and decide whether it suits you or not.   Neither is this list exhaustive by any means! Readers, please list any other sites you know of in the comment box below!

Good luck in your search for that little (or large!) extra revenue.

I haven’t heard of these before. I wonder if (in real life) they’re as worthless as adsense. You really only know what happens, AFTER you’ve joined up.

RJ, just came back from the gruelling world of internet marketing…lol. Google competition is really tight these days. Personally, if anyone here is going to advertise or try out some publisher services, go for CHITIKA and KONTERA!! Cheaper and more targeted advertising awaits you there. I’ve had minimal results from Bidvertiser and lost a few dollars here and there, but at least my Exoclick.com advertising campaign brought me a few sales.

Wonderful article, RJ. I commend you for listing this. My goodness! Google should really think twice about playing “tough”, they’re losing customers! (including me). Personally, I dont use any Google services anymore except the free ones like Blogger, Youtube, Gmail, and the Google search engine. All my publishing and advertising needs are served by OTHER networks apart from Google.

SOrry for the long post! I can talk on and on about this..lol

You did not include Yahoo Search Publisher?? I hate you RJ!! lol

  25. Verniel Cutar Says:

P.S: Adbrite is good, but it has a reputation to make its ads appear on questionable porn sites..and the ads seem cluttered and out of control. I haven’t used it, though!!

There is some great information here and very helpful for those of us who are relatively newcomers to the world of blogging and article writing.

  27. Speed Limit Says:

Thanks for this very helpful information. I would add that in terms of profit some of those sites beat Triond hands down, so create your own websites or blogs and put some ads from the ones mentioned in this wonderful article there.
    RJ, I love you man.
