Should Limewire be Illegal

File Sharing

Do there really need to be restrictions on file sharing?

We live in an age where everything is on the internet. This a digital age. The majority of people rely on the internet for everything from news to paying bills. Data is transferred faster than ever before and the speeds keep increasing.

Limewire like many other p2p programs allow the sharing of files across a vast network. Most people have such programs and if not, they are familiar with the concept. To criminalize the use of such programs would be hypocrisy.

There are probably music and film executives using the same type of programs in their own time. The only reason that it is an issue, is because of greed. Whenever someone is afraid that they may loose money because of something they want to make it a crime.

The free exchange of information only exist to the point where it doesn’t cost anyone else anything. However, no one is harmed in the exchange of data, music or video files. To censor that would be the first towards the complete censorship of the people via the internet. What would be next? No listing to music online, or limiting the news that people are allowed to receive. Then what’s next, the government reading every email. I could see this happening in other parts of the world, but not in America “the land of the free”.

There are far worse problems in the world today than people sharing media files. And far worse social problems in America.

I don’t see the big deal either. MP3 files are very low quality, so I don’t see the fuss. OGG vorbis is much better.
