Spam is Only Possible Because of These Three Things

E-mail

An investigation into the reasons spam is so prolific.

Spam is the bulk mailing of unsolicited mail. There are three things that make spam possible.

1. Email is free to send. Even a tiny charge such as a fraction of a cent would give the spammers who send tens of thousands of messages per day a financial consequence.

2. It’s as easy(and cheap – see 1) to send 10 million emails as one. Sure – it takes longer to get 10 million through the server, but that process is automated. If spammers had to send emails one by one, spam would be dead overnight.

3. A very small minority of people respond to spam e-mail. The number is miniscule, but if even one spam message gets a result, or earns the spammer some money, then they have justified sending the other 10 million.
