How to Detect Spam in Your Inbox

There is a growing amount of spam offering instant riches. Is this another outcome of recession? Everyday we have to fight an increasing number deceptive offers in our inboxes. If you are not careful about detecting spam email, it could well end up in disaster.

There is a sudden increase in spam mails that appears to be very genuine and very difficult to identify as spam. The subject lines are so attractive that makes them appear to be most trustworthy. Many people are falling victims to these deceiving mails suffering from financial losses and identity theft. These mails are designed to extract personal information from you and lure you towards a cunning plot and may end up in huge financial loss and credibility. Some of these mails are convincingly designed to escape powerful spam filter, which is installed in the mail server.

Identification of spam mails seems to be very difficult for many people. Following are some tip that can help you to fight and protect you from this menace.

  • Check the Sender’s Email Address. This is the preliminary check can make on a mail. If the email received is claimed to be from a particular company and you find the email address does not contain company name, but simply free emailid then this is the first evidence for you to count it as spam mail. For e.g, if a company called ABC is sending you a letter, the mail should be from xyz@abc.com and not from xyz@yahoo.com or xyz@gmail.com.
  • Check the URL. If an email is asking you to click a link, never do that before making a checking on that URL. Sometimes genuine mails also can ask you to click a link. In order to check the link whether it is pointed towards the right direction, just hover your mouse over the link and look at your statusbar. There you can see the actual link. Make sure that this Link is from the company and not from some other location. If that is different from that of the company link then you should report it as spam.
  • Check in the Search Engine: Copy a keyword from the mail and do a search on the Internet. You can search for the specific company name specified in the mail or subject line etc. Many of these mails reported in the Internet can clarify can give you a clue.
  • Applying Common Sense: This is most important before deciding to reply a mail. Sometimes an well written email offering you immediate riches may prompt you to take immediate action as instructed in the email. Before taking such an action just ask some questions yourself, about the offer. Critically analyze it. Remember nothing comes free in this world.

Many Antivirus software have got a special feature for spam assassination. This feature can be configured from its settings. It will work with your default email client like outlook express to identify the spam mails and take action upon them by either sending it a spam folder or delete them as specified in the configuration settings.

    Now-a-days my inbox is receiving 2 to 5 spam mails every day which I promptly mark as spam. They keep coming offering rewards and highly paying jobs. The basic characteristics of these mails is that it is offering attractive money and describing everything in a legal tone. It is easy to get deceived by these mails if we are not careful.

    Spams and fraud mails are targeting innocent people who get deceived by their attractive subject lines. Sometimes it is about winning lotteries or about millions of dollar transfer from a Bank.There should be extra vigil on the part of people who receives these mails to mark it as spam immediately.

    People tend to be very excited when they receive emails, which are fraud in disguise. The common nature of fraud emails are they are designed to deceive. There is no solution to combat these mails than applying your commonsense.
