The evening on YouTube started off by searching for some crash landings of different kinds of aircraft after I came across a video on a website that I had been visiting earlier in the day. After spending a half hour or so, watching some real nail biter near crash and burn landings of different types of aircraft from around the world. I started exploring the suggested videos that line the right hand side of the YouTube page. And, then my video selection went from falling down from the sky to soaring high above the clouds in experimental ultralight aircraft.

Honestly, I have said many times that I would never jump out of a perfectly good airplane with a parachute strapped on my back, but after I watched the video down below, I would rather take the the jump than actually fly where this guy has flown. Truly, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the feat of flying so high in a tiny ultralight aircraft is most incredible watch.

Don’t be surprised to notice your knees knocking a bit, especially if you have a fear of heights or flying, which I have a fear of both.

For best experience, select the “Full Screen option” that you can choose by clicking on what looks like four brackets on the bottom of the YouTube video screen and is to the “Right” of the word “YouTube”. Choose the Full Screen option and experience the flight as if you were actually sitting in the pilot’s seat. Turn “ON” your speakers and Turn “UP” the Volume to enhance the overall experience.

But perhaps that comparison should tell us something?  As it’s so much easier to entice a large number of people into watching a video than it is to get them to view your writing content, and since it can in any event be so much less labour-intensive, perhaps that’s the avenue we should be looking towards in our efforts to make money online?  The only snag is that, although there is a mechanism that allows YouTube users to earn from their video uploads, it’s extremely cumbersome – you have to wait to be ‘invited’ to become a ‘partner’, which will only happen once your video reaches a certain (fairly high) number of views.  Until then, you won’t be earning a penny, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be earning anything after an invite either.

Fortunately, there is an alternative.  About two or three months ago, I stumbled across a site that works in exactly the same way as YouTube, except for two important details – you start earning from the moment you upload your videos, and you get paid direct by the site owners to your Paypal account.  The number of views your videos require to earn a significant amount of money looks quite daunting at first glance – the maximum amount possible is $30 for every 10,000 views.  But just remember how much easier it is to get those kind of numbers for a video than it is for an article – and if you have any doubts about that, simply browse through some of the videos at YouTube, and you’ll be amazed how many have well over 100,000 views!  You’ll also learn about the kinds of subject-matter that attract the most video views – basically, you’re looking to post anything that’s funny, or quirky, or sexy, or celebrity-focused.

Because the site you’ll be using isn’t as well-known as YouTube or the other obvious alternatives, you’ll also need to actively promote your videos to ensure you get a significant number of views, and thus boost your earnings.  This really isn’t as difficult as it sounds – in fact, you’d be amazed how much easier it is to promote a video than an article you’ve just written!  For instance, if it’s a celebrity video, simply head over to a few of the many hugely popular celebrity forums, and post the link there.  Or if it’s a TV-related video, there are any number of TV forums that will do the same trick.  And if you’re in any doubt about where to start, a Google search will swiftly give some clues about the forums other uploaders on the site use.  Incidentally, you’ll also discover how much other people are earning from the site, and I can promise you that your jaw will drop to the floor.

The stats on this one speak volumes – over 1,200,000 dislikes (compared to just over 600,000 likes). Think about this for a second, someone, somewhere is laughing all the way to the bank no matter what. They say that even negative exposure is still positive exposure. And when it comes to Justin Bieber that is surely the case! The sheer number of people who are ‘hating’ on him are giving him the exposure he needs to be ‘loved’ by others.

It’s like when John Lennon claimed the Beatles were bigger than Jesus – people started burning the Beatles albums in protest, ironically though they were actually buying more albums just to burn them; the Beatles had never sold so many records in their life!

Sorry, need to apologise for that, how can anyone mention Justin Bieber in the same breath as the Beatles. Moving on!

Forget the Bieber, this video has over 1,800,000 dislikes, compared to just over 200,000 likes. This whole song has to be a joke. Surely a joke. It is a joke? Yes? No? Someone once said that it was because of her age that this song is so bad! Of course, it should be made clear – she didn’t write it! In fact it was written by two guys. One of them once said: “I’m getting a lot of criticism saying I’m exploiting rich kids and their parents.” The warning signs are there, perhaps this is the future of music after all.

Anyway, let’s not forget the mere mortals of the world who found fame on YouTube for being ridiculous, daft, stupid, mad, crazy etc etc, and there are plenty of them out there!

Songs are always a good way to open things, including articles. With that in mind, here’s a really awesome machinima song based on Minecraft and a quest every Minecraft player can sympathise with. Namely, the endless search for diamonds.

There are few science fiction creations more memorable and well recognised than the Predator. Now someone has come up with the terrifying idea of merging the innocence of Minecraft with the bloodletting of the Predator films. Very well created video which almost looks like it could actually be a mod for Minecraft, this is definitely one of the best Minecraft videos out there.

Eternal Island

This next video isn’t on Youtube, so I’m unable to embed it I’m afraid. However, visiting the link and you will find yourself watching one of the most expertly crafted Minecraft videos on the internet. Taking an already atmospheric game and removing all the extraneous pieces leaves you with just a tense and horrifying atmsophere. Very well crafted, and quite possibly the most terrifying Minecraft video to be found, Eternal Island is definitely worth watching.

Probably the largest and most successful video hosting site after Youtube, Metacafe is well known in the online community. With hundreds of thousands of videos and millions of viewers worth of traffic everyday, Metacafe is a great place for people to upload their videos should they dislike Youtube for whatever reason. Metacafe also provides a great place for amateur video makers to make money, with a rewards program that rewards new and unique content with money. Getting a video accepted to the rewards program is difficult however, though not impossible.

Megavideo

Megavideo is a hugely popular video hosting site. It is well liked for its tremendous speed of loading videos, as well as the massive library of already uploaded tv shows and movies for people to watch. However, Megavideo does impose a time limit on free viewers limiting people to 72 minutes worth of video within a certain time frame. Usually users must then wait half an hour (sometimes more) before their counter is reset. Despite this, Megavideo’s large library of HD television shows makes it a very popular website for people who are looking to catch up with their favourite soaps and crime shows.

Revver

Revver advertises itself as the first viral video sharing website. You can enable ads on your videos in Revver, which allows you to earn money per impressions similar to the Metacafe Rewards program. However, Revver is far more accepting of videos into the monetary sharing program, and hosts a large number of independent movie maker shows already, which makes it more useful for indie film makers than Metacafe. Revver also lacks a time limit, which makes it more enjoyable for the viewer than Megavideo. However, the ads at the beginning of some videos can get very annoying, very quickly, driving your viewers away.

YouTube is used by many people. You make an account and then you put up videos, look at videos, subscirbe to channels, and like or dislike thing. Did you know by doing this you are making money for other people. People Like Nigahiga, RayWilliamJohnson, Shanedawson all make money on how many views, likes, subscriptions and a lot of other things on YouTube.

RayWilliamJohnson makes 2 videos a week which each gets around 4 million views. The money he gets out of this is close to $5000 dollars. The advertisement before a video, is the sponsored product that is paying this person to make videos. He asks for subscribers and thumbs up so more people can come to his videos, thus more money. This website can show a person’s daily income on their YouTube video.

If you make videos consistently and keep on getting more views, you too one day could earn a lot of money off of this YouTube business. Justin Bieber started off YouTube and now look where he is. This is a life changing website for many people and now you know why. 

I have some advice for all the admins, devoted fans and followers of Ninjavideo. Yes I read the Manefesto,
yes I admit guilt at having watched some of their illegal content, and yes,  I now feel compelled to offer my two cents.

Ninjavideo should go legal. Not like Hulu with their crummy reject shows, but as a database of quality programming. Just upload biographies, reviews and trailers of the videos. Don’t upload the full length shows. Then users would still get informed about interesting content they wouldn’t have access to otherwise. I mainly used the site as a reference to research movies before deciding to rent them anyway. The actual content they uploaded was unreliable and would load half the time. People really liked the organization, the banners and the info.

Ninjavideo could still maintain a presence as a brand, as a community and as a forum where people could discuss movies, documentaries, and tv shows. I could still find out what shows are airing and when, and see whether it would be worth my time to watch them.

Hopefully the admins don’t end up doing too much jail time. But if they ever do resolve their legal woes,
take heed of my advice Ninjavideo people. And come back as a legal institution.
