Blogs are at the center of the new journalism.
At the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette I do try to squeeze in news about local events that the readers of the blog might be interested in. After all, the blog is set up like a newspaper. And as the blog evolves it will report more local news simply because it has a constant need for content.

One of the online newspapers that I read encourages its readers to be reporters, too. The newspaper has no print edition. If the reader’s content is accepted for publication the reader/reporter gets paid. In this way the newspaper can have reporters anywhere in the world. It cost the newspaper nothing to have all these reporters all over the world. No news no money.
Of course, the Gazette is strictly a one person operation; but there are millions of one person blogs out there reporting the news. It’s the new journalism; and occasionally a blogger of one of these one person operations will have an article picked up by the national and international online and print outlets.
Yes, it all comes back to money. Much of national and international reporting is moving online. Since the beginning of blogging, local reporting has always been online.
So, the Gazette is now in the very center of the new journalism. The Gazette may never break a big story, but you never know.
The point of this article is, if you’re looking for content why not consider being a reporter of the news of your city, neighborhood, school or church?
There are plenty of opportunities in the new journalism for the imaginative blogger.

I think it depends, not all blogs can work well, some just shrink from the search engine.

A useful tip. Your news reports could be related to the theme of your blog. I often cover railway news in my blog because it fits in with the general theme of the blog and it interests my readers.

The great challenge to a blog is to keep it updated, to come up with new posts and ideas.
