The Naked Blogger

Did you hear about the stunt pulled by the R & B singer Erykah Badu?  It was all over the media.  Her hometown is Dallas, Texas.  She walked down the street in her hometown in the middle of the day and slowly stripped until she was nude and then acted as if she was shot, falling down at the exact same spot where JFK was assassinated.  Of course she had a video crew with her and they did the entire thing in one take and then got the hell out of there.  The filming became the video of her song “Windowseat” and of course the video went viral and the song is a hit.  I had never heard of her before this stunt.  That’s her in the photo below.

I Googled the video and watched it.  The video follows her down the street through passersby as she strips until she is nude and falls to the ground.  The video is shot in slow motion and her breasts, behind and vagina are blurred out but its quite a performance.  The song is hot, too.  I’m a new fan.  I’m a fan because of the music but I’m even more of a fan because of the risk Erykah Badu was willing to take to promote her work.  If the police would have been around she would have been arrested.  Since they weren’t around she was charged with a misdemeanor.  And of course now she’s in more demand as a singer than ever.  Recently, I saw her on television performing “Windowseat.”  She kept her clothes on.  She doesn’t have to take her clothes off now.  She’s news.  She’s the mother of three children.  Being an R & B singer is how she pays her bills.

I use my blog to help me pay my bills.

I know some of you reading this may disapprove of what she did.  I understood that.  But I can’t help but admire her marketing savvy.  Some people will say anyone can walk down the street and take their clothes off.  Well, sure, but anyway doesn’t sing like she does and anyone is not going to look good stripping and anyone is not a recognized R & B singer.  Nor does anyone have the nerve to do what she did.  So, getting the kind of publicity that she got is not that easy.

No, this article is not about Erykah Badu but it is about blogging and marketing your blog.  I still can’t reach 100 hits a day at my blog.  I’m still trying to figure out how to promote it.

I can’t do what Erykah Badu did but I can think of more original online marketing strategies that I haven’t tried yet.  Every blogger who wants to increase the presence of his or her blog online, who wants to reach the next level of blogging has to emulate Erykah Badu.  I know I do.

  3. I hope you don’t have to strip to get more hits Guy.lol. You probably should have more writing stints at other ezine sites to promote your work. Link it to your blog. I have one or two articles on other sites I wrote many months back that is still bringing in visitors to my site monthly.

I would strip too…but the view would not be pleasing.

I don’t think what works for women will work the same for guys (guys meaning men generically, lol). I get your point, though.

She’s so daring. I couldn’t do much to improve page views too. This one’s truly enjoyable, Ken.

Actually, everyone, I have a two part article that is scheduled to be published at Flash Fiction Chronicles later this month. FFC has a much higher page ranking than my blog and I’m hoping to become a regular contributor to FFC. I hope having links from FFC to my blog will get me closer to my goal of 100 hits a day at my blog, the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette. The PFFG averages 60 hits a day.

I’ve never thought of stripping to sell my articles? but you make a good point as usual if no one knows of your work, you need to promote it in a different way, good luck with your articles Guy. LB

You have to admire the woman. She put it on the line to promote her work and it happened. Good luck to her.

  17. Ha! Very funny. We all heard about it and I’ll bet she’s crying all the way to the bank. At my stage of the game, I wonder if I could get paid to promise to keep my clothes on?

    Good article!

  21. It’s a big world and competition’s fierce. Somehow we gotta be extra creative to be noticed, but I can’t go that bold either.
