So when did this craze start?
Blogging is not really a new concept. It has been around for many years, and blogs are being set up in massive numbers. In fact every single day, hundreds of blogs get registered. They are so popular right now, people take advantage of it to make a six figure income. How? Tell you in another post.
Anyways, blogging is one of the most popular things to do on the internet. There are hundreds of thousands of blogs out there, and Google and other search engines absolutely love them. Why? Because of the fresh good quality content that it finds. Search Engines love content, which gives them a huge lead over other websites.
No matter what, people and search engines will always love the concept of a blog.
But it wasn’t like that in 1990. Blogging was different. In fact it didn’t even exist. It was still evolving from some of it’s early ancestors. At that time, the closest thing to a blog were forums and bulletin board systems (so that’s where you get the word post from!). These were some of the early predecessors to blogging.
However, that was not something a lot of people did (people barely even had a computer, not to mention internet). It was done by a few people that were able to do it. But then, later on, in the rapid evolution of blogging came the neanderthal of blogging, called the online diary. According to Wikipedia,
“Most such writers called themselves diarists, journalists, or journalers.”
These people were like the pioneers of blogging. They just wrote about all the things they did in their daily life on their blog without caring who read it or didn’t. They are like the true bloggers that all the people trying to make money with blogging should be like. They only wrote because they felt like it, not to sell ad space.
Anyways, those days are all gone, so let’s continue with the history.
The use of online diaries grew amazingly popular during the period of 1994 to 2001. It grew really popular to the people that were online. On September 17, 1997, the term “weblog” was born, giving rise to a new generation of writing, and online diaries.
However, it took two more years to create the term “blog”. This, however was one of the accidents that lead to good things. It was accidentally created on the “weblog” of Peter Merholz. He tried to joke around, and wrote “we blog” on his blog, inadvertantly creating the next most popular word on the internet.
Since their times, blogging has gained fans as if it were Miley Cyrus. It has spread like wildfire all over the internet world. Hundreds of millions of blogs sprung up from that time to now. This was especially contributed to new blogging platforms like Blogger, WordPress, TypePad, and the once popular Open Diary.
In fact, it’s gained so much love within fifteen years, it has even made me start blogging. It made an internet gamer into a freelance writer/blogger. It was and still is that addicting to the blogger. If you start with a good idea and commit to it, you probably won’t stop.
