Is blogging one step forward and two steps back?
The Internet has evolved into a place where almost anyone can write anything, and at the same time appear as an expert. Look up anything using Goggle and you are sure to stumble upon pages which previously started out as blogs. The question is, who’s to say whether these web pages contain true information or whether they are the handy work of someone with only loose information on the topic.
Way back in the day, when you wanted information you would normally need to go to the library and there look up what you needed in books. Regardless of how long and laborious this process was, we were almost guaranteed that the information to be found was true and verified.
It seems now a days we all want to be experts. Granted, we know more today than previous generations, but it doesn’t mean in some ways we are better off. Take for instance a person who takes advice from an health blog to treat an illness which ends up causing more harm. Or a student researching information for an essay which ends up not being entirely true.
Despite all the misinformation floating around in cyber-space, at the end of the day, I probably wouldn’t do much to change the whole digital mess we call the Internet. If anything, we should adopt the attitude that everything we read should be scrutinized and taken with a grain of salt. Blogging like it or not is clearly here to stay.
