Edgar Allan Poe is a literary hero of mine. Even though he died before the American Civil War, his influence is still felt on American letters. Edgar Allan Poe was not only a wordsmith, he was also an influential critic, essayist and editor.

Well, my blog the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette recently passed 27,000 hits. That works out to a little over 1,600 hits a month since The Gazette began to publish in September of 2008. I’ve got my blogging sea legs under me and now I’m ready to make some bold moves to increase the readership and influence of my blog.

In the past few days I applied to an online company that pays bloggers to do reviews of products and services on their blog. The company sent me my first topic. It had to do with online gambling. I pointed out to the company that this was outside of the interest my niche audience. The company replied that it would see if any of the clients it represented had topics within the niche of my blog. I am not going to publish just any old thing on The Gazette.
Blogging about online gambling would totally alienate my core audience. And I want nothing to do with encouraging people to gamble.
Something that is more promising is that I’ve decided to run a contest. I’m thinking of giving an award to contributors for pieces published on the blog. The award will carry a small cash prize. The contest will be ongoing. And I’ll give the award to the best piece out of a certain number of already published contributions. There will probably be a first place winner who will get the award and cash prize and two honorable mentions. The contest will be open to those contributors who make it into The Gazette and who have a PayPal account. Hopefully, the contest will generate more readers, more contributors, more marketing buzz on the web and of course more hits for my Triond profile. At lease that’s the plan.
Every blogger and every content provider must occassionally re-invent his or herself. I’m sure my hero, Edgar Allan Poe would understand.
I don’t want to be a one-trick pony.

I forgot to tell you. Edgar Allan Poe is my daughters favorite writer. When her sister lived in NYC, she had to go to some store 4 times to get a figurine of him. They got a delivery and they sold right away.
