A interview with Donna Reynolds she writes for Idol Thoughts and Foxes on Idol

American Idol is a phenomenon. The show is viewed each season by millions. This past season, Season 5 has proved to be the most popular season thus far. There are many websites and blogs dedicated to American Idol. However, “Idol Thoughts” at http://idolthoughts.blogs.syracuse.com/ is one most fans realize is the place to go, to get the most up to date information. The blog is very informative and entertaining. I contacted Donna Reynolds who runs the blog and she agreed to be in my Blog Spotlight. Now let’s get on to the interview.

When did you first publish the Idol thoughts Blog?

Idol Thoughts is actually an offspring of my original blog on www.syracuse.com that I started in June 2003.

What made you decide to do the blog?

Originally, the blog was set up to cover local entertainment, but I ended up spending so much time writing about American Idol, that in November 2005, we decided to change the name and focus exclusively on Idol.

What about American Idol inspired you so much as to start a blog dedicated to it?

I have been watching Idol since season one and every year I have gotten more involved. I have been writing articles about American Idol for www.foxesonidol.com since April 2003, but that was not enough! The blog gives me the chance to write more informally, and post articles whenever I want.

Has anything in your life changed since you started the blog?

I wouldn’t say that my life has changed since I started writing the blog, but it certainly has changed since I began writing about the show for Foxes on Idol.

If so What?

I have had the opportunity to connect with contestants from several seasons, and as a result, have met many of the Idols and maintain a relationship with them. I have also written three books on the show and am recognized as somewhat of an authority on all things Idol. People seek me out for quotes in articles, and I have been contacted by several former Idols who are looking for promotional assistance.

What other writings do you do?

I am actually a technical writer by trade, and work on user manuals, parts lists, training documentation, and other types of manuals. I have been doing this for six years now! In addition, I am a contributing writer to several local publications and a couple of trade magazines. I also write web content on assignment!

What do you feel made Season five so popular?

The show has gained popularity every year, but I think season five was the most talented to date, and it was well-balanced in terms of musical styles. There was something for everyone – whether that is country, pop, rock, R&B, or Taylor! The contestants were likeable and seemed to genuinely care about one another – much more so than in seasons’ past. It was the first season where there was no clear winner early on, and the outcome remained in doubt right up until Chris was eliminated. I really thought that it would come down to Chris and Taylor, but when Chris got the boot, Taylor was the obvious choice.

What question are you must asked by readers?

The main question is about CD sales. People want to know how their favorite is doing. I get a lot of reader comments on things I’ve written, though. Fans of particular Idols are not shy when it comes to taking me to task if they feel that I’ve “dissed” their Idol!

Is it hard making the time to keep the blog up, with everything else that you do?

Yes!

Why do you think Taylor Hicks has become so popular?

Taylor is a musician, not just a singer or performer. His musical roots go deep, and he appealed to all of us who were sick of the cookie cutter pop singers that have long dominated Idol. Taylor “feels” the music and was able to bring the audience into his performances. I also think that his acknowledging his fans on a weekly basis made them fiercely loyal. No other Idol contestant had ever done this, and it really made a difference. Taylor’s fans felt as though they were working with him to get him through each week. It was brilliant.

Have you got to meet Taylor?

I have not met Taylor (yet). He was very well-insulated, and I was not able to make a connection. I’m working on it, though! I don’t really have any insight or information on Taylor that isn’t common knowledge.

How many regular readers do you think you have of the blog?

That’s hard to say – around 2,000 per day, but that goes up and down depending on the day of the week! This number goes up dramatically once the season starts, though. During Idol, I had several 10,000 hit days with double that in page views. I obsessively check my stats every day!

Who do you think has been the most popular Idol? Why?

So far, probably Clay Aiken, Kelly Clarkson has sold more CDs, but Clay’s fans have stuck with him through thick and thin, and he can still sell out a venue in a matter of minutes. He typifies what Idol is supposed to be all about – an ordinary guy with an extraordinary talent who goes from obscurity to super-stardom overnight. No one was a more unlikely Idol than Clay, which is one of the reasons why he is so loved.

How much time do you spend on average per day on your site?

An hour or so, sometimes more.

What are some of your favorite blogs besides your own?

MJ’s Idol Blog and Gray Charles, and yours, of course!

What has been your greatest success in life?

Seeing my first book listed on Amazon!

If you where trapped on an island by yourself what 3 things could you not live without?

That’s easy – my laptop, my iPod, and my cell phone! Of course, this would assume that I had power. If that were not the case, I would say plenty of water, a good pair of running shoes, and a Bible.

Do you have any tips for the blogger wannabe?

Let the blog reflect your personality. Don’t hold back your opinions, and use your own “voice.” Don’t be afraid of what readers will say – they are anonymous, after all! And sometimes, it’s best to ignore the negative emails.

Donna Reynolds writings are interesting and informative, if you need to know anything about what’s going on in the world of American Idol. Visit her sites and blog and you will understand why I felt Donna Reynolds was the obvious choice for my blog spotlight. American Idol Season 6 is soon start and you be sure Donna will once again be there giving us all the contestant news and gossip that we want.
