How Much Money Will You Make Blogging?

Not too long ago, I got a message from a new member of the Triond community asking how much money I made from blogging on Triond so that he would have an idea how much money he was going to make.  I’ve gotten several questions like this.  I always give an evasive answer.

First off, such a direct question always seems impolite and intrusive.  But each time I get the question it causes me to wonder what my answer would be if I replied in an honest, direct way.

Making money from blogging is such an attractive incentive.  Blogging is my business and my pleasure.  I would never look down on someone wanting to know the skinny on online marketing and money making.  And in my mind I have tried to imagine the expression on the face of one of my questioners if I did reveal what I made.  It would probably be the end of a potential blogging career.  It would be the end of my blogging career if it was all I would ever make; but I know what I was making six months ago and that gives me hope.

I’m very aware that blogging for most bloggers is not a business.  It’s all pleasure, pleasure and release.

For the bloggers who want to make money, making money depends on what the blogger brings to the table.  I bring over forty years of writing experience, 63 years of life experience, two writing degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, over 50 publications in a local weekly newspaper, a secure source of income that allows me to blog for as many hours as I want to every day and the commitment of a workaholic to succeed as a professional blogger.  And I also carry around with me the horror that I could still fail.

But I never tell new bloggers this.  I just say that the amount of money I make is no indication what someone else will make; that every blogger must find his or her own way to making money by blogging.

And I let it go at that.

I believe bloggers with on line money making tips and several affliliated programs advertised in their blogs would normally make more money than other blogs. Honestly speaking, I am still finding a way to earn some extra income from blogging.

I wanna earn even small amount here to experience the feeling earning from triond but sad that I have to wait for $50 to receive my first ever payment. nice article.

  5. Good job, Guy. The fact is, making money from a blog is hard work, but it’s also about learning how to drive traffic to the blog and how to make money from selling ads and using Google AdSense. It’s not just about being a good writer. There are some mediocre writers who happen to be great online marketers, and they make money from their blogs.

  10. Excellent article, Guy Hogan. Making money with a blog depends on content, marketing, popularity, etc. Many don’t understand this and wants to earn millions within a few months time.

A very good answer to the question. I think it is important to have a secure income from another source when just starting out.

  21. Thanks for a great article and for a little more insight into blogging. Most of us have had the problem of wondering how to answer or if we should answer the numerous questions newcomers bring to us about payment. It IS a hard question to answer especailly if we are talking about Triond where payment differs from site to site and views can’t be determined.

    Very nicely done.

I love writing and sharing my mind. My feelings are there and not on money. I love to be known as an author, but I feel being respected for my views and my work is more important than getting paid for it. I am still looking for a job, am bored and I start sharing my frustrations. Letting things out to the world makes me feel better and I hope to inspire others to what I contribute with it.

    Another good one Prof!
Sounds dumb but I still don’t know what it is to blog, maybe someone could enlighten me as to where to go!

  25. I make a full time income blogging, but I also have a great passion for it. My archaeology site got picked up by Discovery, so that’s when I knew I should spend much more time blogging than writing pay per view articles. I love Triond, but I love blogging much more.

  28. Imagine if you added Google AdSense to your blogs and articles like this. I have found that my Triond revenue has almost tripled since the addition of Google Ads. I was surprised to not that you have none on this article…

I can surely relate to this one guy. I was once one of those questioners who are very eager to find money in blogging. And now, I’ve also experienced being asked about being asked on how they’re going to boost their Triond income. I couldn’t find a word to respond them. I could not encourage them if what they really wanted is an instant bulk of money through blogging.

Well, I’ve enjoyed my time doing blogs. I’m sure you also are enjoying, right? This article is very honest.

I believe 99% of all bloggers stops trying to make money because they are not patient enough. it is almost impossible to make money instantly, it always cost time and effort. If you want to read more than read some blogging tips at my website:

This article is a genuine thought. A lot of thinking process is involved in this. One should really read this before making an attempt to earn through blogs. Quite informative.

I am just blogging for fun :D

  34. I’ve been debating on starting to blog.

  35. Guil says:

I like your post, and I’m glad that you still have a passion for blogging after 40years.
And obviously with all that experience on the table you must be making decent money :)

  36. James DeVere says:

I could posit a guess that, “You make about $10 absolute max per MONTH blogging.”

I have been writing for Triond for about eighteen months and have made $17.35US.

I know you are a very good writer and this is just a guess. The way to make money on-line is as a network security person; as a Web designer (even they don’t make much) or a computer network installer.

Writers are at the bottom of the pile and any rumour of hundreds of dollars being make as a Web content author is probably extra good luck.

Come to think of it, Guy – you could be that celeb blogger – you write so well . Good luck . j

  37. strovek says:

Yes, Blogging is tough work. I gave up sometime back but am back because I finally have something that I can write regularly on – my children’s bedtime story :)

  38. damaris says:

Hi Guy, great article, people must understand that what you put into it, is what you\’ll get out of it. If a person is serious about writing at the very least they should to and take a course on writing that would be a good start:) I just started writing for me personally I write because I feel I have something to say, period.

What\’s funny is as a child I always thought of writing a book and speak in front of large crowds. Speaking in front of large crowds would be fine, but writing…… I am just not a good writer I tend to write the way I speak….that\’s not how to write properly. So I just write for the sake of having something to say….
    Thanks for sharing Guy

  39. Personally, I don’t think it’s particularly “rude” to ask about a member’s earnings, ESPECIALLY if the question comes from a new member who, after all, joined Triond for the very same reason that 99 % of its members probably did: to make some money off writing – and doubly (or is it triply?) so if the website itself does not tell you how much, approximately, you’ll be getting for an article.

You have all the right to decline giving such information, of course, but I don’t think it should be interpreted as rudeness.

    Anyway, good luck! : -)

  40. As Triond puts it, to earn more you have to deliver more. More articles mean more ads get placed thence more chance to earn. There are lucky streaks but patience is a virtue that pays. Thanks Guy. Nice piece. :-)

  41. JeremytheGreat says:

The article was alright but people already know they have to spend time and enjoy it. You are continuessly evading the question. People want to know how much you can make if you put time in! Some people only have an hour to spare and would like to write a bit and earn some cash but if they are making 5$ a month it’s frankly a waste of time. Next time answer the question before wasting more peoples time. You remind me of politicians they start talking about something else and avoid the real question.

  42. My ultimate goal is to make USD100 a day. Don’t know if that is greedy or not.

  43. LoveDoctor says:

Wow! You have lots of comments on this one. I totally agree with you. Asking someone how much they make blogging is intrusive and really none of their business. There are a bunch of haters out there so you did the right thing by giving an evasive answer. Like you said, it all depends on how good of a writer you are, your education and university degrees and work experience which you have acquired through your hard work and perseverance.
