Expanding Your Blog’s Reach

While I was watching television one night, the old Petula Clark song “Downtown”  was played in the background of the show that was being broadcast.  I like the song.  I saw Petula Clark perform the song on my family’s black and white set when the song came out.  Even though I grew up a rocker I always liked Petula Clark and her music.

Petula Clark and her music is a good way for me to introduce my subject: We bloggers and content providers can’t keep doing the same thing and expect to keep our audiences happy.  We have to expand our reach.  We have to add to the mix.  We have to push the envelope.  But here’s the difficult part.  We have to do all these things while at the same time staying true to our core subject, to our core readers.

It’s obvious what my blog, the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette, is about.  It’s in the title; but that doesn’t mean there can’t be articles about sex and politics on the blog, too.

As a matter of fact, many of the articles on The Gazette deal with blogging, linking right back to my articles on blogging in my Triond profile.  I figured that blogging would be something that my readers would be interested in.  And I’m right.  My stats page shows what links are clicked on.

I’ve noticed that some of the content providers here at Triond who I would only find on, say, Authspot are venturing into Writinghood or one of the other associated sites.

That’s a good thing.  As wordsmiths we have to venture out without losing a hold of the thing we do well.

Now, in my mind, Petula Clack did not sing rock.  I would say she sang pop; but just because I was a rocker didn’t mean I couldn’t appreciate a song like “Downtown.”

Like the connection with writing and Downtown. We all need Downtowns of some kind in our lives.

Very true, I have two or three core subjects I call them which I enjoy writing about. I do write about something new every two or three days. We as writers need to change our subject matter every now and again else readers will see your name and think “Another football article or another history lesson” So your bang on the money a little variety is needed. I was a rocker and always liked her, too. Using Petula was pretty clever message about branching out, and mixing things up in a blog.

I really like your stuff on blogging, keeps me motivated. I do know we need to expand the reach and I am lucky I have more than one category I love writing about. Of course it takes a while since it ia a one-person operation but I have been making some good process.

  29. Venturing out in the world of writing is a good thing to do to widen our reach. It’s a lifelong learning experience. It’s great that life offers a lot to write about. Another great post, Guy!
