Blogging: One Hit Wonders

When I hear the phrase, “one hit wonder” I think of people who break through in their field on a national or international scale and then you don’t hear anymore from them.  They hit it big once and then slowly, very slowly fade away.  I especially think of the one hit wonders in music.  Three musical acts come to mind.  There was Astrud Gilberto.  There was the Strawberry Alarm Clock and there was The Kingsmen.  If you don’t remember the acts maybe you remember the hits that brought them to the attention of the music buying public.

Astrud Gilberto had the hit, “The Girl From Ipanema” in the early 60s.  The 1967 hit of the Strawberry Alarm Clock was “Incense and Peppermints” and the hit of the Kingsmen is my all time favorite one-hit-wonder song, “Louie Louie” which hit #2 on the Billboard Chart in 1963.  Man, do these songs bring back memories.  If these acts had any other hits I don’t remember what they are (actually I looked all three acts up to make sure I had my facts straight and found Astrud Gilberto had done “The Shadow of Your Smile” which I definitely do remember).

And you know what?  Who ever owns the rights to these songs made a lot of money when they were hits and they are still making money off of the songs to this day.  I bet that adds up to a lot of money.  Talk about passive income.

What can we content writers and bloggers learn from all these one hit wonders?

Well, I know that when the two-part article that I wrote for the Flash Fiction Chronicle blog is published at the end of this month, I estimate that it will be read by more than 10,000 readers in a one month period.  That will be the largest audience to ever see one of my articles in a single month.  How many readers will decide to buy the digital collection Compressionism: The Pittsburgh Stories or will visit my blog the Pittsburgh Flash Fiction Gazette I don’t know.

If I end up being a one hit blogger because hundreds of people buy the book and thousands visit the blog in that one month and then afterwards my book sells and visits fall to only a few sells a day and 100 visits a day for the rest of my career as a blogger–you know what?  I’ll take it!

Or as Gertrude Stein might say, A blog is a blog is a blog.

I agree you should be proud to get so many readers, it certainly is not easy. Keep on writing and I’m sure you won’t be a one hit wonder. LB

Better to be a one hit wonder than to never have made it at all.

Keep on keeping on. Rome wasn’t built in a day. People say that a lot even when it doesn’t fit the category.

I prefer to be stable than a one hit wonder. Blog is something where there should be regular fresh content added. Or else the ratings would go down and again you would have to start building up right from the beginning.

  19. I’m sure you have more than one sensational story to tell Guy.

  20. Good luck.Go for it.
