F. Scott Fitzgerald penned one of my favorite novels, The Great Gatsby. Most literary critics consider it a masterpiece. The man used every bit of his life that he could as material for his work. He used his imagination on the material of his life to make art out of the niche he worked in: romance. Bloggers and content providers can do the same thing.

I think imagination has a lot to do with being a blogger and a content provider. We all draw upon life for our content. Life is all we know. But I think what makes a blogger’s or a content provider’s work distinct is the imagination that is brought to the work. We all bring life to the work. The challenge is to bring imagination to the content.

We can learn about online marketing and search engines. We can learn about e-mail subscriptions and website hosting. We can learn about blogging and the proper use of words; but imagination..
What is imagination?
This is the definition of imagination given by my handy dandy dictionary: mental faculty forming images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses.
Well, that’s a lot to chew on. At least it is for me. When I taught undergraduates at the University of Pittsburgh from 2004 to 2006, I was working on my MFA, I would come up with these little sayings to explain things. So, I would like to try another little saying to explain what I’m trying to say now.
There are no boring blogs, only boring bloggers.
I think the difference is imagination. Using our imagination is a challenge we have to meet. Gatsby was a creation of his own imagination. Now that was some imagination.

You are quite quite right imagination plays a big part in making our writing interesting. Different people can write about the same subject, some will be boring but others will make you want to read every word because they bring something of themselves to make the writing sparkle.

That’s true but content matters also. I mean some things most people just aren’t going to be interested in so no matter how well–or imaginatively–they are presented, the articles on those particular subjects are not going to get that many clicks.
