Blogging: Don’t Let Tags Ruin Your Blog

I’ve been blogging for around four years.  And I’m ashamed to admit that for two of those years I didn’t know what I was doing when it came to the proper use of tags.  Tags are the key words or phrases a blogger uses to help search engines find the content of a blog.

WordPress is my present hosting platform.  There is a small box for tags to the right and below the new content box.  It’s really a very user-friendly set up.  The blogger types in the post, runs it through the grammar and spell check, types in the key word and phrases in the box for tags and then hits the publish button.  No muss and no fuss.  The only problem is the tags won’t do any good if the key words and phrases are not in the body of the published content.

I would concentrate on my post, giving great attention to structure, proper English and all those other things. Then when it came time to pick the tags I would pick words that were shocking, sexy, bold and confrontational.  Stuff I was sure guaranteed that the search engines could not possibly pass up my content.  And the search engines would not have passed up my content if the key words had been in the post.  My post would be 200 words long and it would have 80 tags, most of which had nothing to do with the content.

For the life of me, I couldn’t figure out why my blog was getting only a few hits.

Well, I’m the studious type.

By constantly reading other blogs and articles about blogging I finally figured out that key words had to be taken directly from the text of the post.

For those of you who figured this out in the very beginning, I hope this article gave you a good laugh.  For those of you who are blogging challenged like I am, I’m glad I could help out.

Excellent advice! This is definately something I’ll keep a check on with my own blog now, perhaps I’ll go back and look over the tags I have used on my previous posts having read this too.

ken, the same thing goes for poets. I’ve read poetry on this site where some of the tags had nothing to do with the poem.

Teves, a lot of new bloggers don’t know this and some veteran bloggers don’t know it. It took me a couple of years to realize what I was doing wrong.

Hi, Guy, thanks for sharing. I don’t know about blogging yet. I just started my Blogger a week ago. This article of yours helps me a lot on what to do on tags. I’ve yet to familiarize the layout, the functionalities, etc….

Very well like me. When I got serious with blogging, I read a lot about keywords and its proper distribution on your content. The key is to stratigically place keywords within your title, in the first paragraph, a litlle in between, and in the last paragraph. However, never spam your content with the same keywords.
