Blogging: Don’t Forget Syndication

For ten days now my personal blog has been in syndication.  What is syndication?  Well, in my dictionary a ”syndicate” is defined as: combination of individuals or businesses to promote a common interest.  So, syndication is when this promotion takes place.

You may have seen the letters RSS.  RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  Why would a blogger use RSS?  Why, to bring in more readers.  Syndication allows readers to find your content more easily.

The online syndication that I’m using is Feedburner.  I was familiar with it because I used it on a previous blog.  When I deleted the blog I forgot about syndication.  Now with my present blog I remembered Feedburner.  If you’re thinking of syndication here are a few things you might want to keep in mind.

First off blog several days a week.  Syndication works better when it has something to syndicate.  In that way it’s just like blogging.  There will be several options you will have to decide on.  Read carefully what the options will do.  Some may benefit you and some may not.  Like podcasting.  I’m not a podcaster.

Feedburner allows a blogger to monetize the feed of his or her blog.  And Feedburner is free.

Unless you’re a big-time blogger and your website gets a lot of traffic, don’t expect syndication to bring in lots of traffic.  I use the option of just showing the title of a post and a few words so that if a reader wants to read the entire article the reader has to click on the title and that brings the reader to the blog.

In the pass few days the syndication brought three readers to the blog.  Once a blogger sets up syndication the syndication is automatic.  You publish on your blog and the content appears in syndication.  If I get five new readers from syndication every week and one new subscriber from e-mail subscription every two weeks, I’ll be a happy man.  Most hosting platforms offer some kind of e-mail subscription.

Syndication and e-mail subscription are easy to use online marketing tools every blogger should be aware of.

You can also set up an RSS feed on twitter. Every time you post it will tweet. My twitter is set up with an automatic feed to Facebook. That way I get them both without doing anyhing.
