Blogging

A newbie blogger’s guide to keep going.

After only 3 months of blogging, I’ve been lucky enough to figure out a few things that are essential to new bloggers like myself. Here’s my list:

  • Be Patient – Don’t get frustrated if you don’t get a lot of traffic right away. Remember, it’s a new blog. It will take a little time for your blog to get noticed.
  • Write About What You Love – If you write about things you love, your readers will feel the passion you put in your articles and are more than likely to come back. Don’t write for the sake of writing. Your posts will come off as boring lectures and your readers will leave your blog in a heartbeat.
  • Circulate – Having great content is not enough, you need to make an effort to get noticed. Join social networking sites to promote your blog. There are a couple of networking sites catering to bloggers, these should be your priority. Sites like StumbleUpon, MyBlogLog, BlogCatalog, and Bumpzee are good sources of potential visitors/subscribers to your blog. Try to visit other blogs and leave quality comments on posts you liked. Chances are, the blog’s owner and readers will check out your blog if they liked your comment.
  • Befriend Other Bloggers – One of the benefits of blogging is the opportunity to get to know other bloggers and form new friendships. Try to find bloggers who are open to forming a partnership with your blog. This is a great help as you and your partners will be promoting each other’s content on a regular basis.
  • Post Regularly – Try to stick to your posting schedule. If you usually post at noon everyday, then stick to that. If you only make one post per week, then try to publish it on the same day every week. Having a great article isn’t going to help you if your readers don’t know when your next post will come. If your blog is already established, i.e., you already have a big subscriber base, then you could get away with infrequent posting. For new blogs however, posting regularly is the best way to go.
  • Be Appreciative – Stop worrying about the fluctuation of your subscriber count, or how little traffic your blog is getting. Try to remember that your blog is new and that all good things come to those who wait. Remember that every visitor or subscriber to your blog is precious. It doesn’t matter if you have 10 or 10,000. Every single one is precious.
